Toddlers

18 – 30 months

Hilmon School would like to welcome you to our Toddler Program, ages 18 months to 30 months. At this age we believe children learn best through play along with a wide range of teacher facilitated activities. Play is crucial in how children learn because it promotes initiative, individuality, and autonomous thinking. Each classroom is designed to encourage children to learn through the exploration of each of the centers. Each classroom has centers with toys, puzzles, books and more which are arranged invitingly to gain each child’s interest. The centers are refreshed regularly with materials that go along with the centers,

In our Toddler program we encourage each child to learn how to make positive choices on their own. We have designed the classrooms in a way that allows each child to learn on an individual basis by choosing a center to engage in. We will continue to focus on the six developmental domains in this classroom by implementing age appropriate activities in the following areas: language arts, math/cognitive, science/sensory, art, motor skills, and music/movement.

Our staff will implement lesson plans that will develop your child’s skills in a variety of age appropriate activities. Each morning and afternoon the children will participate in group time in which they will work on recognizing shapes, colors, numbers and letters. They will also introduce calendar and weather.

In addition to these activities we will encourage healthy social interactions by making sure each child is aware of their friends feelings and help them to engage in constructive play with other children.

The children will explore the outside world with outdoor play both in the morning and afternoon (weather permitting). The children will enjoy a wonderful playground with age appropriate equipment where they can climb, run, and ride bikes.

Areas of Development

Language Arts

Our staff will develop language arts by reading stories during circle time and creating a library center that will encourage children to discover their love for books. We will also begin introducing letters A-Z.

Math/Cognitive

Our toddlers will begin learning to recognize numbers 1-10. We will also begin to introduce shapes and colors into our curriculum through a wide variety of age appropriate activities.

Science/Sensory

We have created a science center within the classroom that will allow the children to explore on an individual level during free play. Our staff will also create a curriculum that will immerse each child into the world of science and discovery through different activities and experiments.

Art

Each classroom has an art center that is designed to allow children to explore their creative side using crayons, markers, paint, glue, and much, much more. Our staff will develop different art activities that will coincide with the theme of the week.

Motor Skills

By using our spacious outdoor play area each child will begin to increase their gross motor skills while enjoying the safe age appropriate equipment.

Music and Movement

Each classroom has a music center that will increase their knowledge of instruments and their sounds. The children will use these instruments to enhance their favorite songs.
